ChatGPT’s Market Share Drops Below 50%, Gemini and Claude Gain Traction
A new analysis by Sensor Tower reveals a significant shift in the AI chatbot landscape, with ChatGPT's market share falling below 50% for the first time, while Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude see substantial growth.

The reign of ChatGPT as the dominant AI chatbot has seen its first significant crack, with its global market share dipping below the 50% mark for the first time in May, according to an analysis by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. This shift signals a more competitive landscape, with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude emerging as strong contenders.
ChatGPT, while still the most popular AI chatbot, held a 46.1% market share in May. This represents a notable decline from its previous stronghold. Following in its wake, Google’s Gemini has solidified its position as the second-largest player, capturing 27.7% of the market. Anthropic’s Claude has also experienced impressive growth, reaching a 10% market share.
Key facts
| AI Chatbot | Market Share (May) |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1% |
| Gemini | 7% |
| Claude | 0% |
| Others (Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Copilot, etc.) | Remaining |
The remaining market share is distributed among other AI tools, including Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Meta AI, and Microsoft’s Copilot. Notably, none of these other AI technologies individually command more than 4% of the market, underscoring the significant lead held by the top three.
Claude’s Rapid Ascent
One of the most striking trends highlighted in Sensor Tower’s “State of AI” report is the meteoric rise of Claude. In January of the same year, Claude’s market share was a mere 3.7%. Its surge to 10% by May indicates a strong appeal to users and successful market penetration.
User Behavior and Ethical Considerations
Sensor Tower’s analysis suggests that user behavior plays a crucial role in these market shifts. The firm observed that AI chatbot users are increasingly willing to switch between platforms based on external events. A significant factor influencing user migration was reportedly the escalation of tensions between Anthropic and the Pentagon in the spring.
While OpenAI did not impose ethical restrictions on military use of its AI, Anthropic reportedly did. This distinction, according to Sensor Tower, appears to have resonated with users, leading to a substantial increase in ChatGPT uninstalls and a corresponding rise in users migrating to Claude. This suggests that ethical considerations are becoming a more prominent factor in user adoption and loyalty within the AI chatbot space.
Continued High Usage, Shifting Growth
Despite the erosion of its market share, ChatGPT continues to be used by a vast number of people. In May, the platform saw 1.1 billion users. Gemini followed with 660 million users, while Claude, despite its rapid growth, still trails with under 250 million users. The collective user numbers across all AI chatbots remain exceptionally high.
However, the growth trajectory has clearly shifted. OpenAI’s period of explosive, unhindered growth appears to be leveling off, with the competitive landscape now drawing in a larger share of new user acquisition and existing user migration. This indicates a maturing market where differentiation, ethical stances, and feature sets are becoming increasingly critical for sustained success.
Implications for Developers and Users
The evolving AI chatbot market has significant implications for both developers and users. For developers, it underscores the need for continuous innovation, distinct value propositions, and careful consideration of ethical frameworks. Companies that can effectively address user concerns and offer unique capabilities are likely to gain ground.
For users, this increased competition promises more choice and potentially better services. The willingness of users to switch platforms based on ethical considerations and external events empowers them to influence the direction of AI development. As the market matures, users can expect a more diverse and responsive ecosystem of AI tools.
