Xiaomi Expands Smart Ecosystem to European Kitchens with New Refrigerators and Washer-Dryers
The Chinese tech giant is launching its large home appliances in Europe, aiming to integrate consumers further into its connected 'Human x Car x Home' ecosystem.

Xiaomi is making a significant push into the European large home appliance market, launching its smart refrigerators and washer-dryers to bolster its ‘Human × Car × Home’ ecosystem. This move signifies Xiaomi’s ambition to extend its connected device strategy beyond smaller gadgets and into the core of the home.
The new offerings include the Mijia Refrigerator Side-by-Side, a 621-liter capacity American-style fridge with stainless steel finishes, and the Mijia Front Load Washer Dryer, boasting 8kg capacity and energy efficiency claims exceeding EU Class A standards. Both appliances are designed to be controlled via touch panels, voice assistants like Google and Amazon, and the Xiaomi Home app, allowing users to manage settings, receive notifications, and potentially access new features remotely.
The strategic importance of these launches lies in Xiaomi’s established ecosystem. The company reported over 1.11 billion connected devices globally as of its latest investor data, with 22.7 million users engaged with five or more Xiaomi devices. Introducing large appliances in Europe, a key market where Xiaomi already has a user base, aims to deepen this engagement, making the ecosystem more comprehensive and harder to leave.
Expanding Home Appliance Reach
The Mijia Refrigerator Side-by-Side features a dual inverter cooling system and Ag⁺ Fresh technology, which the company states reduces odors and bacteria, including E. coli, while keeping food fresher for longer. It offers three storage levels and 18 compartments.
The Mijia Front Load Washer Dryer is presented as a modern appliance with multiple utility modes, including a quick wash, steam function, and a hygienic mode that uses high-temperature steam and hot water to eliminate 99.99% of bacteria. The drying function utilizes a three-dimensional airflow and sensor technology to optimize drying times and minimize fabric wear.
Xiaomi’s global debut of these large appliances in Europe follows their initial launch in other markets last year. This expansion into major home appliances signals a deliberate strategy to integrate consumers more deeply into its connected living environment.
Ecosystem Integration as a Strategy
Xiaomi’s growth in the smart home and lifestyle segment has been substantial. In 2024, this segment surpassed 100 billion yuan in revenue, growing by 30% year-over-year, with large home appliances showing particularly strong growth at 56.4%. The European market, known for its receptiveness to value-for-money offerings and Xiaomi’s existing brand presence, represents a critical testing ground for this strategy outside of China. The company had previously signaled its intentions at a Munich event last September.
Challenges in the European Market
While Xiaomi’s price-to-performance ratio has historically attracted consumers, the European appliance market presents unique challenges. Unlike mobile devices, large appliances require robust post-sales support, including installation, maintenance, and technical service, with an expected lifespan measured in decades. Consumer expectations for reliability and durability are high, with brands like Bosch and Miele having built decades of trust.
A significant hurdle for Xiaomi is the establishment of a consolidated technical service network across Europe. Building consumer confidence in appliances is heavily reliant on dependable after-sales service, a critical factor for long-term customer loyalty. While competitive pricing might drive initial purchases, the true test will be Xiaomi’s ability to provide reliable service and support, ensuring the ‘no-fault’ expectation that European consumers have for their major home appliances. The company has not yet announced specific pricing for these appliances, but availability is anticipated in July.
