Supermarket Salmorejo: OCU Study Reveals Store Brands Outperform Premium Options in Taste and Nutrition

A recent analysis by the OCU has found that many supermarket own-brand salmorejos not only match but exceed premium versions in both nutritional profile and taste, challenging consumer perceptions.

A recent study by the Spanish Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has put supermarket salmorejo under the microscope, with surprising results for consumers. The analysis, which evaluated 30 refrigerated, packaged salmorejos, found that many budget-friendly store brands not only rival but often surpass premium options in both nutritional quality and taste.

The findings challenge the common assumption that higher prices equate to superior quality, particularly for a staple of Spanish gastronomy. The OCU’s investigation aimed to identify the best packaged salmorejo for consumers to enjoy during the warmer months, a time when the cold soup is particularly popular.

Nutritional Triumph

Contrary to potential fears of excessive preservatives and additives in pre-packaged foods, the OCU’s 2026 analysis revealed no industrial additives in any of the 30 salmorejos tested. In fact, when assessed against the OCU’s Healthy Scale, which considers Nutri-score, fat content, salt levels, and processing, all the analyzed products were rated as good or very good options.

Furthermore, the study indicated that these supermarket versions might even be more calorie-conscious than homemade preparations, often containing less bread and oil. Brands such as Carrefour Classic, Eroski, and Vicasol Delicias achieved nearly perfect nutritional scores, reaching 90 out of 100. This suggests that consumers can find healthy and convenient options readily available.

Taste Test Disappointment

While the nutritional profiles were generally strong, the OCU’s taste test presented a different picture. A panel of expert chefs conducted a blind tasting, and a significant 77% of the salmorejos failed to meet culinary expectations. The primary reason for this failure, according to the OCU, is that many brands deviate from the traditional salmorejo recipe.

Manufacturers reportedly add extra ingredients to enhance acidity, extend shelf life, or achieve a more intense color. Common additions include red pepper, which can mask the tomato’s natural acidity, and onion and vinegar, ingredients more typically associated with gazpacho. These deviations from the authentic recipe appear to compromise the flavor profile that Spanish consumers expect.

Top-Performing Brands

Despite the widespread taste issues, the OCU identified specific brands that managed to balance nutritional value with acceptable flavor. Consumers do not need to opt for the most expensive products to find a good salmorejo. The OCU’s ranking highlighted several brands, with Hacendado and Auchan leading the pack.

Hacendado received the highest overall score in the analysis, achieving 70 out of 100 at a price of €3.00 per liter. Auchan followed with a score of 65 out of 100 and a more budget-friendly price of €2.18 per liter. Other brands noted for their positive performance include Día, La huerta de Don Simón, and Realfooding.

OCU Recommendations

The OCU’s primary recommendation is clear: many inexpensive store-brand salmorejos offer superior taste and quality compared to pricier premium options packaged in rigid plastic. The organization also stresses the importance of checking ingredient lists. The presence of vinegar, red pepper, or onion in the ingredients should serve as a warning sign for consumers seeking an authentic salmorejo experience.

This study underscores the value of consumer analysis in navigating the supermarket aisles. It empowers shoppers to make informed decisions, often revealing that the best choices are not necessarily the most expensive.

Why this matters for ReviewArticle readers:
This analysis, while focused on a specific food product, touches upon themes relevant to AI and data analysis in consumer product evaluation. The OCU’s methodical approach to assessing nutritional content and taste, using expert panels and defined criteria, mirrors how AI can be employed to analyze product data, identify trends, and even predict consumer preferences. The study highlights how objective data (nutritional content) can sometimes diverge from subjective experience (taste), a common challenge in AI applications. Furthermore, the identification of recipe deviations and the subsequent impact on quality are analogous to how AI models might detect anomalies or deviations from expected patterns in complex datasets, leading to insights into product formulation and quality control.
