Renfe Expands Pet Travel Policy to Accommodate Large Dogs Up to 40kg

Renfe, Spain’s national railway company, has introduced a new policy that allows passengers to travel with larger dogs, extending the weight limit to 40 kilograms. This update aims to remove a historical barrier for pet owners, making train travel more accessible for those with medium and large-sized canine companions. The new regulations come into effect on July 21st.

New Regulations for Large Dogs

Under the revised rules, dogs weighing up to 40kg will be permitted on all of Renfe’s commercial services, including AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, and Intercity trains, as well as Public Service trains like Avant and Media Distancia. Previously, only smaller pets (up to 10kg) could travel in a carrier without occupying a seat, with an additional charge. While Cercanías (commuter) trains already allowed pets without weight limits, this marks the first time a major operator is facilitating the transport of larger dogs across its broader network.

Conditions of Travel

To ensure a safe and comfortable journey for all passengers, specific conditions apply. Dogs will occupy the interior seat next to their owner. Owners must keep their dogs on a non-extendable leash, not exceeding 1.5 meters, and must use a muzzle during station waiting times and while boarding and disembarking the train. With the purchase of a pet ticket, a travel kit including a seat cover and a mat is provided. The ticket for the pet can be purchased online via the Renfe website or app, or at physical and virtual agencies. When booking, passengers will need to add the pet supplement, and the system will automatically assign two adjacent seats. A notable new feature is the ability to board the train from any intermediate stop, not just the origin of the route.

Renfe stated that this service is an expansion of its “Proyecto Mascota Grande” (Large Pet Project), which had been previously limited to specific high-speed rail corridors. The company has reportedly already transported over 800 large dogs on its AVE trains. This initiative is expected to attract new passengers and differentiate Renfe in the increasingly competitive Spanish liberalized rail market.

Why This Matters for Travelers

This policy change addresses a long-standing issue for dog owners who previously found train travel challenging or impossible with larger pets. It offers a more viable and potentially cost-effective alternative to driving or relying on specialized transport services. With approximately 7.5 million dogs registered in Spain and pets being a significant part of many households, this move acknowledges the growing demand for inclusive travel options.

Limitations and Exclusions

While the new policy is more accommodating, certain restrictions remain. Dogs exceeding the 40kg weight limit are excluded. Puppies under one year old, potentially dangerous breeds, and female dogs in heat are also not permitted to travel under this service. Additionally, the service cannot be used on connecting trains, trains with scheduled alternative transport plans, or in synergistic seating arrangements. For passengers who may have allergies or an aversion to animals, Renfe has designated a maximum of two large dogs per train, located in a specifically designated “pet friendly” carriage. Owners are required to carry all necessary official documentation for their pets and a cleaning kit.
