AI Agents Revitalize Century-Old California Creamery Facing Closure
Petaluma Creamery, a historic California cheese producer, was on the brink of collapse before implementing AI agents to streamline operations, boost sales, and secure its future.

A century-old artisanal cheese maker in California, Petaluma Creamery, has been revitalized and is experiencing significant growth thanks to the strategic implementation of AI agents. The business, once facing imminent closure, has leveraged artificial intelligence to overhaul its archaic operational systems, improve efficiency, and expand its customer base.
The company’s near-collapse was attributed to a confluence of factors, including the pandemic’s impact on orders, the owner’s health issues, and the loss of a major client. However, the intervention of a tech-savvy relative and the adoption of AI platforms have pulled Petaluma Creamery back from the brink.
Streamlining Operations
Larry Peter, who purchased Petaluma Creamery in 2004, transformed it into a renowned brand supplying numerous supermarkets and restaurants. By 2020, however, the business faced significant challenges. The turning point came with the involvement of Daniel Peter, Larry’s cousin, a former Salesforce systems implementation specialist. Daniel took on the role of CTO, finding an operation heavily reliant on manual processes and outdated systems.
Orders were recorded on paper, while invoices were managed through QuickBooks. A significant hurdle was the complex internal coding system for over 150 products, which employees had to memorize. Furthermore, orders were processed in units like boxes or pieces, while invoicing was done in pounds, creating constant reconciliation issues.
Daniel’s first step was to digitize decades of accumulated data and migrate it to the cloud. He then built a new operating system utilizing Salesforce and the Agentforce AI platform. This foundation allowed for the introduction of AI agents to manage various business functions.
AI Agents in Action
The AI implementation focused on replacing the complex product codes with a natural language search system, significantly speeding up order processing. The agents also automatically convert unit-based orders into pound-based invoices.
Another AI agent was developed to predict customer purchasing behavior based on historical data, enabling faster order placement and ensuring no items are forgotten. Additionally, an agent was deployed to optimize delivery routes, controllable via natural language prompts. A further agent monitors milk traceability, recording critical data such as weight, temperature, time, and origin.
Expanding the Customer Base
While AI agents enhanced operational efficiency, they could not replace the human element of sales. Larry Peter collaborated with Kevin Goddard, a seasoned sales professional in the industry. By combining Goddard’s extensive network with the new AI-powered tools, Petaluma Creamery managed to increase its client roster from just 13 to over 300.
Although the creamery has not yet reached its peak revenue of $50 million, it is projecting $10 million in sales for the upcoming year, demonstrating a remarkable recovery.
The Future of AI in Business
The story of Petaluma Creamery highlights a less-discussed aspect of AI’s impact on the job market. While automation often raises concerns about job displacement, this case illustrates how AI can serve as a tool for business survival and growth, particularly for established companies grappling with modernization. Daniel Peter noted, “It is very likely that this place would no longer exist without it,” underscoring the transformative role of AI in preserving traditional businesses.
