From Stock Photos to AI Powerhouse: Freepik Rebrands as Magnific
The Spanish company, formerly known as Freepik, has rebranded as Magnific, signaling a significant pivot towards AI-powered creative tools and aiming to become the "Photoshop of the AI era.

Magnific, the creative technology company formerly known as Freepik, has officially rebranded, signaling a decisive shift from its origins as a stock photo provider to a forward-looking platform centered on artificial intelligence. The change, marked by a visit to its Málaga headquarters, underscores the company’s ambition to become a leading force in the AI-driven creative landscape, akin to the “Photoshop of the AI era.”
The rebranding reflects a strategic evolution that began years ago, with the company acquiring and integrating AI tools, most notably the image upscaler Magnific in 2024. This acquisition paved the way for the adoption of the new name, signifying a departure from the utility-focused “Freepik” to a more encompassing brand identity.
Por que importa
“Freepik denotes utility,” explained Omar Pera, Chief Product Officer. “The utility no longer defines us. We are a creative platform that wants to help people showcase their talent using artificial intelligence to elevate it, not replace it. That wasn’t achievable with the Freepik brand.”
Joaquín Cuenca, founder and CEO, elaborated on the company’s trajectory, which began as an image search engine and evolved through subscriptions, expanded content offerings, and a strategic pivot to AI-powered generation tools. “The original name no longer aligned with what we were doing. It was time to change it,” Cuenca stated.
Contexto
The company’s deep dive into AI was a personal conviction of Cuenca, who saw the transformative potential of generative AI early on. While initial versions of DALL-E were met with skepticism, DALL-E 2 marked a turning point, convincing Cuenca of AI’s rapidly advancing capabilities. This led to an “all-in” investment in AI, a decision Pera supported with a framework for survival and growth regardless of AI’s advancement pace.
A culture of rapid learning and adaptation has been fostered internally. Regular “guild” meetings keep employees informed about new AI models and industry developments. This proactive approach is exemplified by Cuenca’s personal adoption and subsequent company-wide rollout of Claude Code, an AI assistant for programming, encouraging employees to view code as an intermediate layer rather than a focus of direct work.
Magnific’s operational strategy is to focus on the application layer of AI, rather than competing directly with foundational model creators like OpenAI or Google. The company leverages its own specialized models for image and video upscaling, alongside integrating best-in-class third-party models. This approach positions Magnific as an aggregator and orchestrator of AI capabilities, providing professional creative teams with advanced control and collaborative tools.
“We make an application for professionals: film studios and marketing agencies,” Cuenca explained, drawing an analogy to Microsoft Word versus Photoshop. “Our vision is that marketing and audiovisual production will merge. Google, Meta, and others aim for mass audiences and more basic use cases. That doesn’t concern us.”
The company’s competitors are now seen as Adobe Firefly, Runway, and Canva, rather than traditional stock photo agencies. Magnific aims to provide a professional “wand” for creative control, not just an instant “trick.”
The transition has not been without its challenges. Magnific acknowledges that allowing AI-generated content from contributors initially diluted the quality of its traditional library. The rapid pace of AI development also creates internal pressure to release products quickly, potentially leading to missteps. Furthermore, the rebranding itself faces the hurdle of overcoming ingrained user habits, with many still referring to the company as Freepik.
Looking ahead, Magnific plans to consolidate its position as a go-to platform for professional creative teams and launch “Magnific Originals,” a studio initiative to produce long-form content in collaboration with artists. This move signifies a bold step from tool provision to content creation, capitalizing on the growing use of generative AI in the audiovisual industry.
The company’s journey from Freepik to Magnific represents a significant strategic pivot, driven by a clear vision of AI’s future in creative industries. The ongoing renovations at its Málaga headquarters, symbolized by a partially obscured mural of the old Freepik logo, mirror the company’s own transformation—a blend of past foundations and a future being actively built.
