Madrid is on the verge of opening a new 675-meter tunnel along the Paseo de la Castellana, a significant infrastructure project that will incorporate advanced artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring and management of traffic and environmental conditions. This development marks a technological leap for the city’s underground transit network, aiming to create a safer and more efficient environment for drivers.

AI-Driven Traffic and Safety Features

The new Castellana tunnel is designed to be significantly more technologically advanced than existing underground routes in the city. Unlike older tunnels that are nearly two decades old, this new infrastructure will be equipped with AI-powered systems capable of identifying vehicles, monitoring their speeds, detecting incidents or violations, and tracking pollutant emissions within the tunnel. This real-time data will enable the system to automatically adjust ventilation based on detected pollution levels, optimizing air quality without manual intervention. The overarching goal is for the tunnel to function as a self-regulating system, using data to anticipate and mitigate potential issues, from traffic jams to vehicle breakdowns, before they escalate into risks for users.

Enhanced Security and Infrastructure Details

Beyond its AI capabilities, the tunnel is being built to the highest safety standards. According to sources cited by La Razón, in addition to AI, the infrastructure will feature improved emergency exit systems and Wi-Fi coverage. The tunnel will feature three lanes in each direction, with additional access, exit, and link points connecting to major routes such as the M-30, M-607, A-1, and M-11. The route connects the existing underpass at Calle Sinesio Delgado in the south with the Nudo Norte near Hospital La Paz. To minimize the impact on existing trees, the tunnel has been designed in two levels, preserving a significant number of trees, particularly larger conifers.

Future Expansion and Surface Development

The excavation of a second tunnel level is scheduled to commence this summer. This extension is planned to eventually connect the Castellana with the Begoña neighborhood and the new Madrid Nuevo Norte district. While the infrastructure for this connection will be prepared, it will not become operational until the link is completed.

Concurrently, surface development is underway with the construction of Parque Castellana. This green space will cover 70,000 square meters and feature over 1,500 trees, a large water fountain, and a 35-meter-high pergola covered with solar panels. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida has indicated that these solar panels will ensure a consistent energy supply for vehicles operating within the tunnel. The long-term vision for the area is that the surface will primarily accommodate public transport and local traffic accessing buildings in the vicinity, with through-traffic directed underground.

This initiative represents a significant step in urban infrastructure development, leveraging AI to enhance the functionality, safety, and environmental management of critical transportation arteries.
