Spain is set to become a prime location for observing the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, thanks to its numerous Starlight-certified destinations. These locations are recognized for their commitment to preserving night sky quality, offering ideal conditions for astronomical events by minimizing light pollution.

The Starlight Foundation certifies spaces that actively defend the quality of the night sky and encourage access to starlight. This initiative, originating from a 2009 meeting of the Starlight Initiative’s Working Group on World Heritage Reserves, has the support of the International Astronomical Union and the World Tourism Organization.

Types of Starlight Certifications

Starlight certifications are granted to various types of locations, with two primary categories being Starlight Reserves and Starlight Tourist Destinations.

Starlight Reserves are typically natural spaces with strict conditions for maintaining natural illumination and night sky clarity. These reserves often comprise three defined zones: a core zone with pristine night sky conditions, a buffer zone to mitigate adverse effects, and a general area encompassing human settlements that may influence sky quality.

Starlight Tourist Destinations are accessible places that offer excellent conditions for stargazing. Protected from light pollution, these destinations are well-suited for astrotourism activities. Beyond these main categories, individual towns, cities, parks, trails, campsites, hotels, and rural houses can also receive Starlight certification.

Spain’s Starlight Network

Spain boasts over 70 Starlight Destinations and more than 20 Starlight Reserves. While the world’s largest reserve, Sierra Morena in Andalusia, offers exceptional stargazing, it is not directly within the path of totality for the upcoming eclipse. However, it will still provide excellent viewing for the partial phase of the eclipse.

For those seeking the full experience of totality, 31 Starlight Destinations are situated within the eclipse’s path. The highest concentration of these is found in the autonomous communities of Galicia, Navarra, and Aragón, with other locations spread across the affected regions.

Notable Locations and Preparations

Several Starlight Destinations are organizing specific events and activities for the eclipse. In Navarra, the town of Lerín plans to ring its bells to mark the occasion, while in Soria, Borobia will host family-friendly activities at its observatory. The area of Allande in Asturias is noted as the Starlight Destination where totality will last the longest, approximately 1 minute and 48 seconds.

Aspiring eclipse viewers are advised to consult interactive maps to identify Starlight Destinations. Beyond certification, observers should also seek locations free from obstructions like mountains, buildings, or trees to the west, where the sun will be during the eclipse.
